For my time analyzing the news stations, I studied MSNBC and Fox New's coverage of the election. Analyzing the subtleties of the hosts biases is very interesting. Just looking at what color tie people will wear, will show what party they favor. Many small subtleties go into play. For example, Fox News anchors had a majority of red ties which seems to favor the GOP, while MSNBC anchors wore a majority of blue ties favoring the Democratic party. 

In the coverage of calling what direction the states are going, Fox News has been much more conservative in calling states. MSNBC seems to call the states much sooner then some of the other stations. I remember in a previous election when a news station called the race to soon and led to being wrong by the end of the election. Projecting a winner is a very tricky situation.

MSNBC's coverage declared multiple times that at this point in the evening that the that there is no way that McCain could win the election, and the nation looks as though "blue paint" has been spilled over". Fox News on the other hand, even under such ads, they interviewed some positive McCain supporters saying that its not over yet. Clearly a small bias is showing through each of the stations. 

The anchors on each station speak very carefully. I noticed Fox News talking about the liberal agenda and how the Democrats aren't willing to reach across the isle for compromise. They also seem to defend McCain by saying he "fought valiantly the last couple of days". While MSNBC on the other hand doesn't seem to really talk as much about defending either side, as for them, they already clearly have a winner.

The anchors on Fox News seemed to have a lot more passion and emotion in what they were talking about, as they are the underdogs in this race. I like to see this passion, as the anchors on MSNBC were much more boring and dry in their talking. Even if there is a bias in one of the stations, I have my attention grabbed more by the passion of the anchors on Fox News.

Lastly, MSNBC had a lot of visuals with their coverage. They were trying to be techie and cutting edge with fancy visuals that really weren't that great. It is just added visual food that is unnecessary, and I don't need to see a 3D united states behind the anchor as the camera moves from side to side to make it look more real. I also didn't understand the columns in the background of everything, but it seemed reminiscent of the Democrats National Convention. Fox news on the other hand seems to have a more clear cut and refined visuals, which I enjoyed much more. I don't need some over hyped, weird, 3D graphics to see my results, MSNBC is trying to hard. 

Overall, various minor subtleties on each station led me to favoring on over the other. It is interesting to see how each station tries to play off their bias on the coverage. It is sad to see that we cannot have an unbiased coverage of an election, but it is not in the nature of humans, especially not in multimillionaire who want their agenda shown throughout there station. This is a close election, and I am excited to see who will actually win, when everything is all said and done. I also liked the cookies that they got on Fox News. The people there just seemed more real and fun, and won my viewing for the evening after this blog. 

Front-page News Story Analysis

The first headlining news story that struck my attention on foxnews.com was a story about Palin and her supposed $150,000 shopping spree. With such a heated Presidential campaign its no surprise that little attacks are popping up as important news stories.

I believe that Lasch's descriptions of modern day journalism is justified. We have truly become a dumber society in what is supposed to be the information age. Instead of headlining an important story about a candidates controversial policies, we are giving news about a candidates supposed splurge on clothing by her party. This also shows how politics have gotten dirtier. Instead of stating the facts, rumors and speculation circulate around to try and damage a candidates character. I believe that this is pathetic. There is truly no such thing as a clean, straight forward election anymore. Lasch's descriptions of the modern -day journalism points to this concept of the changing in politics and journalism. He has outlined the history of this concept that has led up to the way things are today. Journalism has a biased today, as it did in the past with Lasch's example that took place during the Russian Revolution.

This article ironically seemed to try to clean up the image of Palin as the original gossip story tried to hurt her. The article did a good job pointing out both sides. Instead of playing around with outside sources, they went straight to Palin and used quotes from her about what was going on. They also present the sides of the people that are trying to attack her and saying what was done with the purchase of the clothing violates the Federal Election Campaign Act. So, this article presented both sides of the attackers and the defense to allow the viewer to eventually come up with their own conclusion. 

Overall, it is sad to me that an article like this even has to come up to explain what is going on with such a ridiculous story of plain gossip. There are more important things to talk about then the clothing of a candidate. If a celebrity can wear a $50,000 outfit to the Oscars, no offense, but isnt running for the office of President more important then then wining a little award. Sadly Presidential candidates have become celebrities and our society wants them to dress the part, but if the price tag come out, then so do the dogs. We truly live in a double standard society. 

VP Debate Analysis

The purpose of the VP debate was to inform and persuade, but unfortunately I believe that it did neither. Both candidates seemed to run around the questions which hurt anyone who was wanting to be informed as they did not answer the questions that were asked. So, the candidates tried to resort in persuading the audience towards their particular cause. They did this by trying to relate to the American people by way of their past experiences and their personal beliefs. Unfortunately I want to be persuaded by being shown that they truly want to change this country by way of good polices, which was lacking from this debate.

The candidates in the debate presented themselves as peer. Once again they were trying to establish a relationship with the audience by trying to relate with them. I believe as a peer, they were effective in relating, but they are not a peer, they are candidates to the second highest position in this country, they should be showing a little more authority over the audience.

Most of the candidates information seemed to be rehearsed in a way that when the questions came up, they only said what they wanted to say instead of answering the questions at hand. Like all the debates the candidates wanted to give more information then necessary, which constantly ran them over their alloted time. 

Neither presenters used any kind of visual aids in their speeches. They both directly spoke from what they had memorized and practiced, or what they knew off the tip of their tongue. The candidates would take minor notes through the debate, but it was only as a minor tool to remembering what to come back to. Over all most of the debate was done without a prompt or visual aid.

Both candidates stood behind their podiums in a very stationary position. They did not move around as it was supposed to be a very formal debate. the candidates also used very few hand gestures as they seemed to cling a little more to the podium. Their manner in stance differed greatly from the Presidential debate in which it was an open forum and the candidates moved around freely.

'08 VP Debate

I watched the Vice Presidential debate last night, and had very mixed feelings. First of all, I hope a lot of people watched the debate. Everyone, especially college students need to make their decisions about this years election by studying and knowing what the candidate is about. One should not blindly vote for a person, just because it is the "hot" thing to do. If you really are not sure who to vote for, then honestly do not. I believe you should have a clear decision about who someone wants to be elected in this country, and because every vote counts, don't take it lightly.

Now, off of my soap box, I will discuss my opinions on the debate. First off, I feel that box candidates were trying to play with the emotions of the public. Each Vice President candidate never really answered their questions specifically, and they liked to go off on their personal tangents. Most of these tangents were them trying to show that they were more like everyday Americans, and that they know the struggles that we go through. Honestly though, would I want Joe Shmo to be President of the most powerful nation in the world? Its great that they can relate, but I feel that they are trying to hard, and their appeal to my emotions is backfiring. Who cares if Palin's underage daughter is pregnant? That has nothing to do with policies or ability to govern, just because her daughter had one bad night. I like to have a personable character in office, but they must be closer to the extraordinary and have the ability to lead a nation. I want to know their ideas on policies and what they want to spend money on, and what's their foreign polices. Even though these larger things may not directly affect me, but everything that happens in our government will inenvertantly affect our lives here and all over the world.

Lastly, I'm going to talk about how Governor Palin did during her speech. I feel at first that she was very structured. It seemed that she was scripted at first, and she was afraid to break the script to answer some of the questions that were being ask. I understand her nervousness, as she is very new in this spotlight, and is still learning a lot. So, she should be cut some slack. I do feel like this structure in her speech did throw her off at first. It is good to be organized, but sometimes you have to improvise for the task at hand, but when you are in the lime light, you have to be careful what you say, so it may be better to say nothing at all then to say something and be completely wrong.

Overall, I believe Palin proved herself and Biden did a good job. I feel like I did not learn anything at all unfortunately. A Vice President is not going to swing my vote, as it is the Presidential candidate who will make the most difference. This is going to be an interesting election, and I am excited to see the rest of the Presidential debates.

Ad Review

To me, this is just a fun ad. It brings back a since of nostalgia from watching the old Herby movies when I was a child. The front of a VW always has such a friendly look and reminds me of a face. It seems to me that it has almost become an iconic image of a car, that anyone, anywhere can recognize as a classic VW.

This ad gives a since of action as the VW van is flying over the horizon of the hill and is floating through the air. The colors are fairly muted and earthy which make the dark red van stand out just enough to know that it is the center of attention. There is a repetition of the sides of the bridge that are on both sides of the image that draw you into the picture giving it a sense of depth, and a sense of closer from keeping your eye from falling off the page. The image is almost divided in half horizontally by the bridge and the sky, which continues to give a sense of uniformity in the image. The van flying through the sky is just high enough in the clouds that it keeps the image from being too bottom heavy.

This ad mainly appeals to my emotions. From the nostalgia of the VW van to the idea of flying, I get enjoyment from viewing this ad. The asterisk about the right corner of the van ads more emotion to the van. It reminds me of a thought accent that one may see in a cartoon. It give the van more emotion to wonder what the van is thinking? What thrill is it achieving?

Finally, I get down to the bottom white part of the page where I receive information about what the ad is about. The asterisk points to the thought that VWs should not attempt this dare defying action without using Genuine VW parts. So to me, this old van has been revitalized by the use of these genuine parts and potentially achieve anything. I believe it is a well down and fun ad that engages the viewer to feel many emotions which leads to the connection that if they want to live these thrills and keep their VW alive, then they should only use genuine VW parts.

Review of Dillard's "Seeing"

Annie Dillard wants the reader to see the way that she sees. In Dillard’s essay “Seeing”, the reader is immersed into multiple perspectives of incredibly vivid imagery that makes the reader feel what Dillard feels. The reader’s emotions and thoughts are constantly being played with which keep him or her immersed in her writings, and ultimately making the reader feel what Dillard feels which leads to wanting more of her emotions by seeing what she sees.

 In the beginning of the essay Dillard talks of how she use to hide a penny and give an unsuspecting pedestrian a route in which to find this small, hidden treasure. Her playfulness in this first story brings a sense of childhood nostalgia to mind. I want to feel the excitement and emotions that she is feeling as she is a child hiding this penny and watching people find something so small and possibly unimportant. This first story will leave the reader hooked as it did me, wanting more of this seemingly simple knowledge that Dillard has to offer.

 Dillard then begins giving some examples of seeing the little things in the world that is going on around us. For example, she gives the image of seeing small cuts of grass in a field that a mouse has slowly munched down over and over to reach the grain at the top of the grass. Most people wouldn’t notice seeing this little pile of nicely cut chute of grass in an area that seemingly would have consumed such a small action, but to see this small pile of grass and to know what action went on to create this minor detail is a feat in itself. It’s something so simple, but Dillard’s writing makes me want to see this feat in action, and to see this minute detail.

 After having my imagination stirred and enhanced, Dillard throws in a story about surgeons who removed cataracts of blind victims, which gave them back their sight. My emotions from this part of the essay are being played with in a different manner, instead of playfully imagining, I am given something harsh from my present reality. The excerpt she gives talks of how the once blind is given sight for the first time, and they have no idea what to do. This new sight is sometimes seen as a burden now or a curse and the items once only known to touch seem completely different by being seen. Something that I take for granted everyday is something that few don’t even have. My emotions now take me to a state of gratefulness for having the ability to see things the way I do, and possibly see things further as Dillard does.

 Dillard’s “Seeing” brings a whirl of emotions through my mind that have made me want to see the little things in life as she does. Through her employment of imaginative stories and vivid writing, she consumed me the reader into her thoughts on “seeing”. Emotions are a powerful concept and Dillard successfully used a play on these to persuade me to her argument.

1st Post

Being a graphic designer is basically communicating a message in a visual way. Designers influence peoples lives everyday by creating an ad to promote an item or an event. They will also design the box in which that item comes in to make it all the more appealing. Everything from consumer items to logos or posters has had careful thought and design put into it. 

Commonly, most people think that graphic design is only on computers, and that is its only domain. There is so much pen and paper that goes into design before it hits the computer, if it even goes that route at all. Its a creative process of researching and stretching one's mind to come up with a compelling idea for a design. For a lot of people if they initially work off the computer at first, it can become a sink whole in which they look to see what the computer can do for them with jazzy brushes and crazy typefaces. One can get lost from their original idea if they don't start to dedicate themselves to a sketch before diving into the world of digital design.

Careful thought into typography is also an important part to design. Each typeface has a unique appearance that can evoke different emotion that can give the viewer a different perception on the subject at hand. So, when designing something, the typeface used can be just as important as the lines or color in the composition. A typeface can scream alert just as much as the color red can. 

Having the ability to create a work of art in a way that is seen by many people in a mainstream setting is something that I strive to do as a potential designer. To say that I created an image so compelling that it made someone buy that item is really incredible to me, and it makes me excited for what my field has in store for me. I have always been interested in the design of things and I am excited to start designing myself. I have already learned so much and I am excited to see where my studies will take me in the field of graphic design.
